Summit Hill, PA

Philip Ginder

While hunting, Ginder discovered anthracite coal on the Sharp Mountain in 1791. He showed it to Col. Jacob Weiss, a prominent area settler. In 1792, Weiss and others formed Lehigh Coal Mine Co, the first anthracite mining company and forerunner to what is now Lehigh Coal and Navigation.

Switchback Railroad

A gravity railroad was built in 1827 to carry coal from the mines in Summit Hill to the Lehigh Canal at Mauch Chunk, which is now named Jim Thorpe.  The early growth of Pennsylvania's railroads was closely intertwined with the mining of anthracite coal. In the early 1800s, Pennsylvania coal mine operators faced a daunting challenge: how to carry tons of heavy black coal from their mines to the canals and rivers below, upon which it could be transported to market.
